Why support Crossroads and Dementia Information and Support for Carers (DISC)?

6,000,000 unpaid carers make an invaluable contribution to people in need, to their families and communities as well as society as a whole. Replacing the care that carers provide on a continuous and reliable basis would cost the British government £ 87 billion a year (actuarial estimates by Carers UK) – a sum equal in size to the recent entire budget of the NHS.

This enormous contribution made by carers often goes unnoticed. Carers care quietly in their own homes, away from the public eye and many people fail to recognise or acknowledge the support they give. Little is said about how difficult it is to make time to care for someone and how physically as well as mentally draining it can be, frequently taking its toll on the private and professional life of the carer as well as their health and well being.
